Both cars wear the McLaren badge. Both run a twin-turbo V8 mounted behind the seats, and both drive the rear wheels. On paper they look like two versions of the same idea. On the road they're built for completely different days.

The 720S is the one you book for the drive itself. The GT is the one you book for the trip. This guide covers the difference, who books each, and how to choose between them.

The 720S: The Drive Is the Point

The 720S is a high-performance model from McLaren's Super Series. It's built on a carbon fibre tub, with aerodynamics tuned to keep it stable at speeds no public road will ever see, dihedral doors that open upwards, and 530 kW from its twin-turbo V8. It's the closest thing to a Formula 1 car you can hire with a numberplate.

It's also a rare sight in Melbourne and Sydney, which is exactly why content creators and brand photographers book it: when rarity matters in the frame, the 720S delivers.

The GT: The Liveable McLaren

The GT is the McLaren for real distances. Underneath it's still a genuine supercar with a twin-turbo V8, but it adds a boot you can actually use, suspension that works on Australian roads and a cabin that doesn't punish you over a 500km weekend.

That's why the GT is the car we suggest most for long drive weekends like the Great Ocean Road, the Blue Mountains or the Gold Coast hinterland. It's also popular for chauffeured corporate bookings, for clients who want something more contemporary and sporting than a Rolls-Royce.

Who Should Book the 720S

Book the 720S if you've driven supercars before and want to feel McLaren's performance-focused approach. Many of our 720S clients have already done a Lamborghini and want to experience a different approach to the same problem: lighter, more precise, more technical.

The 720S rewards a good road and an experienced driver. In the Yarra Valley it's the pick for drivers chasing the technical run up the Black Spur. If this is your first supercar hire, we'll usually point you to the Audi R8, the Urus S or the AMG GTS first, and save the 720S for the second time.

Who Should Book the GT

Book the GT if the trip matters as much as the car. A weekend with luggage, a long coast run, two people and a hotel at the other end: that's GT territory. It's the most comfortable supercar in our fleet for the full Great Ocean Road round trip, and the boot means you don't have to pack like you're going on a track day.

The GT is also $400 a day less than the 720S, which adds up across a three-day weekend.

The Weekend Test

Here's the simplest way to choose. Picture the best moment of your booking.

If it's a single perfect stretch of road, a photo shoot, or the look on someone's face when the doors go up, book the 720S.

If it's arriving somewhere after a long, easy drive with bags in the boot and no aching back, book the GT.

The Kilometre Question

Both McLarens come with a 100km daily allowance that stacks across a multi-day booking. For a long weekend, three days gives you 300km to work with. Longer routes like the full Great Ocean Road run past that, and excess kilometres are charged at the rate confirmed when you book, so plan the route first and size the booking to match.

FAQ

Which McLaren is faster?

The 720S is the more extreme car, a Super Series model with 530 kW and a carbon fibre tub. The GT is still a genuine supercar, tuned for comfort over distance.

Which McLaren is better for a road trip?

The GT. It has a usable boot, road-friendly suspension and a cabin built for long weekends.

Is the 720S suitable for a first-time supercar driver?

It's best for experienced drivers. For a first hire, we usually recommend the Audi R8, Lamborghini Urus S or Mercedes-AMG GTS.

Can I book the McLaren GT with a chauffeur?

Yes. The GT is a popular chauffeur choice for corporate clients who want something sporting rather than classical prestige.

Are both McLarens available outside Melbourne?

Both are based in our Melbourne home fleet and available in Sydney and on the Gold Coast on request.
