Melbourne, Sydney or Gold Coast: Where to Book Your Supercar Weekend

We hold fleet in three cities, and a fair number of clients book a supercar weekend as the trip itself rather than as an add-on to a trip they were already taking. If that's you, the city you pick changes the roads, the pace and the shape of the weekend far more than it changes the car. Here's the honest comparison.

If the weekend is about the roads, Melbourne wins. Victoria has the densest set of genuinely good driving roads within two hours of a capital city anywhere in the country.

Best for: drive days, multi-day touring, clients who want to properly use the car.

The roads: the Black Spur (Healesville to Narbethong), Reefton Spur, the Dandenong Ranges, the Mornington Peninsula back beach loop, the Great Ocean Road, the Otways inland route.

Where we cover: metro Melbourne, the Peninsula, the Yarra Valley and Great Ocean Road drives.

The catch: winter. Wet roads and rear-wheel-drive supercars are a poor combination. March to May and September to November are the strongest windows.

Sydney gives you two different weekends in one city. Short technical coastal drives to the north and south, or sustained road trips west and inland.

Best for: clients who want a coastal drive day and a proper road trip inside the same booking.

The roads: Pittwater via Manly out to Palm Beach, the Grand Pacific Drive through the Royal National Park, Macquarie Pass, the Blue Mountains, the Southern Highlands, Kangaroo Valley.

Where we cover: the Eastern Suburbs, Lower North Shore, Northern Beaches and CBD, plus Blue Mountains and Southern Highlands drive weekends.

The catch: distance. The Blue Mountains round trip is roughly 200km, which is a two or three day booking on a 100km supercar allowance.

The Gold Coast has the best ratio of good road to transit. The hinterland network sits within about 45 minutes of Surfers Paradise, which means less time getting there and more time driving.

Best for: shorter bookings, first-time supercar hires, weekends that mix beach and road.

The roads: the Tamborine Mountain loop (around 150km), the Springbrook National Park loop (around 130km), the Currumbin Valley drive, and the Byron Bay run south.

Where we cover: Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Main Beach, Burleigh Heads, Mermaid Beach, Palm Beach, Hope Island and the hinterland.

The catch: the Byron day trip is roughly 160km each way, so it needs a 150km allowance vehicle or a multi-day booking with stacked kilometres.

Melbourne and Sydney both have long transit legs before the good roads start, which favours grand tourers: the McLaren GT ($2,300), Ferrari 488 GTB ($2,500) or Rolls-Royce Ghost ($2,500), or a 150km allowance car like the Corvette Stingray ($1,400).

The Gold Coast's shorter transit means you can take a more focused car and still spend most of the day on good road: the Lamborghini Huracán ($2,200), Tecnica ($2,500) or STO ($3,000), or the McLaren 720S ($2,700).
