The Audi R8 and the Lamborghini Huracán are the closest thing the supercar world has to twins. Same platform, same V10, built under the same roof of the Volkswagen Group. And yet clients who have driven both will tell you they feel like completely different cars.
Both sit in the Prestige Luxury Rentals fleet, $100 a day apart. This guide covers what's actually the same, what's genuinely different, and which one suits the drive you're planning.
What's the Same
The R8 is, in plain terms, the Audi-badged Huracán. Both are mid-engined, both are powered by a V10 behind your shoulders, and both are proper supercars, not fast grand tourers dressed up as one. Both are two-seaters, and both come with our standard 100km daily allowance.
If the question is "which one is a real supercar?", the answer is both.
What's Different
The character. The R8 runs a naturally aspirated V10 with all-wheel drive, which gives it grip in all weather and a cabin that genuinely works as a daily driver. The Huracán brings the rear-wheel-drive Lamborghini character, sharper, louder in its attitude and more demanding of the driver.
The badge. This sounds shallow until you've done it. The Huracán is the car people stop for at the petrol station, at the valet stand and at the lights. The R8 gets the knowing nod from people who know exactly what it is. Neither is better. Decide which reaction you want.
The legacy. Audi ended R8 production in March 2024. Every R8 hire is a hire in a car that will be harder to find every year, and for enthusiasts that's a reason in itself.

Who Should Book the R8
The R8 is our standard recommendation for a first supercar hire, alongside the Urus S and the AMG GTS. If the rear-wheel-drive character of a Huracán or a Ferrari feels like a step too far for your first time, the R8 gives you the mid-engined experience with a much more forgiving setup.
It's also the smart pick when the forecast is uncertain. All-wheel drive takes the stress out of a wet Black Spur run or a winter weekend, and the comfortable cabin means a longer drive day doesn't wear you out.
And if you're chasing the naturally aspirated V10 sound from this now-discontinued generation, the R8 is the obvious answer.
Who Should Book the Huracán
If there's an occasion attached, the Huracán usually wins. The white Huracán is our most-booked of the pair and the most photogenic car for weddings, formals and milestone birthdays. It looks right in every frame. The purple Huracán is the rarer choice for content creators, music video shoots and anyone who wants a Lamborghini that genuinely stands out from the ones you've seen before.
It's also the car for drivers who want the full Lamborghini experience, with a dry forecast and a good road to enjoy it on.
The Weather Question
For a summer weekend with clear skies, choose on character: R8 for the all-rounder, Huracán for the event. For a winter booking or a wet forecast, the R8's all-wheel drive makes it the more relaxed choice. If you need four seats in the wet, look at the Lamborghini Urus S instead, which gives you the Lamborghini badge with all-weather practicality.
The Kilometre Question
Both cars carry a 100km daily allowance, and on both cars it stacks across a multi-day booking. A one-day hire suits a city loop or a short drive. For the Yarra Valley, the Peninsula or a longer coast run, book two or three days so the allowance matches the route. Our 100km allowance guide walks through exactly how far that gets you.
